As a filmmaker, Fikri has been active for over 15 years, serving in a variety of roles such as director, writer, producer and editor for films ranging from independent productions in South Korea to feature film presentations in Malaysia.

He represented Malaysia in the 2006 Asian Young Filmmakers Forum, a ten-month cultural exchange programme conducted in Jeonju, Republic of Korea. One of only five participants selected from across Asia, he took part in extensive filmmaking workshops, discussions and festivals, culminating in the production of a Korean short film he wrote and directed.

He returned to Korea in 2008 as a recipient of the Art Major Asian scholarship (under the Cultural Partnership Initiative), offered by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Republic of Korea. This allowed him to further his studies in the Master of Fine Arts in Filmmaking (Film Directing) programme.

In 2009, his film, Permata Bonda, would win the Best Short Film award at the 22nd Malaysian Film Festival. It would also won the Audience Award at the 2009 ASTRO Kirana Short Film Awards. Other films include Kopi Dan Dia and Following, selected for various national and international festivals. More recently, he produced LuQman, a film theatrically released in Malaysia in 2017.

In addition to his filmmaking endeavours, he is also active in the Malaysian film community. Since 2011, he has been involved with the Young Filmmaker and Digital Content Forum and the Malaysian Digital Film Awards, biennial events that highlight the industry’s best and newest voices and visions.

He served as a committee member in Filemmakers Anonymous and a curator of Nasi Bungkus Cinema; both are spaces focused on expanding the appreciation of independent films. Fikri is also a co-founder of Thoughts on Films, a platform and podcast that thinks aloud of films in Malaysia and beyond.
